The Old Vicarage at Grantchester

Speaker: Peter Tatum

This illustrated talk covers the history of the village and then focuses on the various owners and tenants of the vicarage itself.

Built in 1685 for St Andrews & St Marys church clergy it fell into disuse before being purchased privately and then it led a much more interesting life culminating in being the current residence of Baron Archer of Weston-Super-Mare and his wife Dame Mary Archer.

It is probably best known for the period at the beginning of the twentieth century when Rupert Brooke lived and wrote poetry there as part of the Grantchester Group, the Bohemian circle of friends including novelists Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster which shared members with the famous Bloomsbury Set.
